My knowledge of Union University was pretty limited until I married Charles. Charles was a Union grad and over the course of our marriage, I would not only hear the stories, meet his Lambda Chi brothers and meet many of his professors, I would also see the fruit of how God used Union to shape and mold Charles for his future. Union University really is a special place. It was a place for Charles that saw beyond the physical and helped cultivate his brilliant mind and heart to be used by God for the future. It was a place for the first time in his life, I really believe, he felt he belonged. And God used that to change his life.

On my way to work this morning, K-Love shared a statistic that “7 out of 10 ‘Christians’ who leave for college, lose their faith during their college years.”

7 out of 10.

If that is true, that is a HUGE number. And I know there are countless reasons that make this statistic unfortunately true. Much of it I believe, are because of weak or no roots. Though they have grown up around church, and know the church lingo, they have never truly made a decision to actually follow Christ. Or, they have chosen to follow Christ but their roots are not deep and when the storms come, when professors challenge their thinking, and they are faced with an onslaught of unbiblical worldviews, their roots give way.

Every day I walk into work, it is a continual and daily reminder of God’s faithfulness in my life in this dark and difficult season. God gave me the perfect job. The perfect job that I needed. A great and encouraging work environment. A wonderful team and understanding boss. And an opportunity to be a part of an institution that works around the clock to have a university for which the above stated statistic is not true for the students that come to our campus. I can only pray that God will give me the ability to be successful and useful in my position.

Union University is an amazing place. It is led by a great and Godly leader. The faculty are not only amazing people who love what they teach, study, write about and research but they desire to see their students not only succeed in their profession but become who God wants for them for their life calling. It is also full of employees and staff that work tirelessly for excellence so that student’s needs are met. It has a rich heritage of those who have gone before to pave the way for generations to come. It is an entire community that desires and seeks to see Christ known in the world today. Union University is a place that desires to see students sent out into the world, no matter who they are or what profession they are in to be employees of excellence but also a beacons of light to a lost and dying world.

Union is an great place and amazing things are happening here. And I am beyond blessed to just be an eeny weeny tiny part of that. Where there was once confusion about what the next step would be, God so graciously provided at exactly the right time.

Whether you have a college student or know a college student, I encourage all of us to pray for college students. Especially for those that know Christ. Pray that their roots in the Word will grow deeper and will be able to stand the storms of life and the challenges that will come their way. College is a time that shapes and paves the way for their life. May we pray that their hearts will continue to be shaped to be more like Christ.

“Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.” Romans 12:12
